E. Christina Herr & Wild Frontier are the very definition of Americana music today. Pulling references from the many “roots” genres, their latest release, <em style="font-size: 14px;">Americana Motel, is a road trip into new territory.
Using cowboy imagery, “Headin” For A Wreck” opens the album with choices, none of which appeal to the singer.
The band moves effortlessly from the modern country sound to something more traditional with the lush “Bluebirds”. As with many of Christina’s songs, it’s real pretty until you listen to the words. “Bluebirds” was a Best Country nominee at the New Mexico Music Awards.
For something totally different, Christina remakes Bruce Springsteen’s acoustic “State Trooper” into the driving, (literally), anthem of a desperate woman running from her demons.
The title track, “Americana Motel”, could be that same woman at a less desperate time…on the road in search of a temporary safe haven.
“Townes” is a haunting song about the wanderings of songwriter Townes Van Zandt and what his travels through New Mexico may have been like. This song was named Best Americana by the New Mexico Music Awards.
A fan of George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Christina had their great duets in mind with “Little Blue House”. However the bridge takes the song far away from that traditional sound.
“Sparks Fly” brings in New Mexico’s Latin influence…A plaintive tale of forbidden love.
Dreams both good and bad are the theme of “Lightning”.
Christina wrote “Look For Me” as homage to country music’s great drinking songs, especially “There Stands the Glass”.
“Matchbooks” is a road song about a specific stretch of California highway and souvenirs of a relationship that ebbs and flows on the journey.
The next piece answers some of the questions in “Headin’ For A Wreck”. Whatever the choices, the song urges one to “Follow Your Heart”.
The album closes on a high note of self-acknowledgement and hope with the punk inspired “Who Luvs You”.
