Open Country is the moniker of Long Beach based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sterling Reed. Reed, 23, has been involved in music for over a decade. “When I was 10 years old, my dad taught me some guitar chords, and then made me practice for a year. I hated it. But at the end of that year, I couldn't put the guitar down, and now I'm so thankful for my father's foresight. Since then, music has become an integral part of my identity. It is a way for me to process, explore, and communicate how I'm feeling.” Sterling recently released the debut Open Country full-length album “Out of the Wilderness: A Series of Beginnings." Music blog writes that the album “represents the best of indie-folk music mixed in with splashes of country and indie-rock.” Influenced heavily by The National, Local Natives, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, and Bright Eyes, Reed wrote, recorded, and mixed the entire album in three weeks. “I just got tired of searching for the ‘right drummer,’ and people’s schedules and goals never lined up. Then I realized I was already able to play all the instruments that I wanted in an album, so I gave it a shot." From here Sterling plans to record his second full-length album, to be released this summer. He hopes to eventually get a band together for a tour.
