Project 86

Sheep Among Wolves

The first sound you hear is the inhale of a breath from frontman Andrew Schwab. And less than a second later the pummeling opening track, “MHS” has you by throat. And Project 86’s tenth, genre-defying milestone of ten songs titled Sheep Among Wolves will not allow for another gasp until the record is through.

“How many bands make ten records?” Comments front man and songwriter Andrew Schwab. “And how many bands can confidently say their later releases can even compete with their earlier material? We honestly believe these songs are strong enough to turn the ear of even the most apathetic listeners who still have a place in their hearts reserved for rock music.”

This is a lean, mean release that is all about memorable songwriting and contemplative lyricism. Whether you are a die-hard fan of Project 86, are casually acquainted, or are oblivious to one of the best-kept secrets in heavy music, Sheep Among Wolves is a record that will keep you listening, and most importantly, re-listening. Every song-and specifically, every chorus-is urgent, connective, and reactive. Is Project 86 post-hardcore? Metal? Rock? It doesn’t matter. Because the band knows that at the end of the day it is only the songs that matter. And these songs really do matter.

“We would like to think we have always had our own sound. We don’t exactly fit with anything else out there because we have never tried to…we just want to write songs that heavy music fans can turn up loud and scream along to at our shows,” Schwab states.

This Pledgemusic funded release is a celebration of twenty years of P86, and ends the band’s second decade with a perfect exclamation point. Fans poured in with support over this unique release, as the band offered a unique proposition to supporters: preorder the record, and hear one song per month until the album is finished. In an era of devoid of true label presence in the marketplace, it was a poignant approach for a band which has always had vehement, if not rabid, backers.

“We embrace the idea that fans are no longer passive listeners, but investors in our livelihood. They drive everything we do, so we loved the idea of rewarding them by being a part of the process. In the end, they are not fans, but members of the band, in the truest sense. So, what better way to reward them than with music along the way, rather than having to wait forever for the final release like so many other crowdfund campaigns?” explains Schwab.

Sheep Among Wolves contains diverse sonic highlights, along with diverse lyrical themes, as has become the trademark for Project 86. While heavier tracks such as “By Constantantine” and “Dead Man’s Switch” will please the hardcore faithful, “Sheep Among Wolves,” “Copper Wish,” and “Freebooter” offer melody without compromising impact. Schwab addresses pertinent topics such as political corruption, transgenderism, and the collapse of the modern Christian church, while offering personal reflections on relationships with trademark hope-infused criticism.

The band plans to tour in support of the album release on December 5, 2017. The strength of P86 has always been the live show, and it is always the goal to expose the music to any and all who would listen. The first single, “MHS,” will beimpacting rock and active rock formats in November.

“Once again, we are nothing without our supporters. We think we have given them, along with anyone who would listen, a collection of songs which will be enjoyed for months and years to come.”
